The Highland Camerata Winter Concerts, with Larissa Venzie

The Highland Camerata proudly presents its Winter Concert Season, with special local performer Larissa Venzie.

Larissa was the first student from her high school to earn a “First Chair” percussion spot in the Virginia All State Band and the first to win a place in the statewide Governor’s School for Performing Arts. She earned a B.M. degree in Percussion Performance from Ithaca College, having studied under the direction of composer and performer, Gordon Stout. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lamba, the National Music Honor Society through Ithaca College. Larissa has given marimba recitals for audiences in our region as well as at the Virginia Highlands Festival in Abington, VA; in Paris, France; and in Linz, Austria. The Highland Camerata will present winter concerts on December 11, 13, and 15. The choir's director, Mary Elizabeth Whartenby, has chosen a varied program of sacred and secular pieces. This is sure to be a wonderful event for the entire family.

Operation Wig Out Over Christmas Child

My church participates in Operation Christmas Child.  We fill shoe boxes with toys for children in the developing world.  This year I decided to fill one shoe box for a boy aged 2-4 and one for a girl aged 5-9.  On Sunday, after the special service praying over and blessing the shoe boxes of non-procrastinating participants, I figured I could fill my shoe boxes and get them to the church on Monday morning, muttering a prayer of blessing over them myself.  Since my children and I were already in Wal-Mart on Sunday, I thought grabbing shoe-box fillin's would be no problem.

Was. Not. Going. To. Happen.
