Hung port again on Cisco Router - Replaced

Submitted by tarvid on Sat, 10/10/2015 - 12:24

Comcast tech replaced the router with another Cisco 3939B. Woody checked out the connected devices. Everything looks good.

Helen, this server, went down again this morning. I bounced power to the server but that was not enough. Woody went to the POP and swapped ports with the Power Distribution Unit on the Cisco Gateway router and Helen came back. Bounced the Cisco router and after about 10 minutes everything came up. Waiting for a response from Comcast on the reliability issue.

Windows 10 upgrade

Dell said don't do it - "we are not providing drivers for Windows 10". My wife did it on her Dell Latitude 13. It works fine although the reboot was rough. Had to hold the power button for a long time to get it to shut down and reboot. Her Latitude 13 has an internal battery which is not easy to get to.

Back to normal

Or at least as normal as it gets. New router installed. All lights blinking appropriately.TWR roujter  peaking a little under 15Mbps. Normal is closer to 25.  I am logged into Helen and websites seem alive and happy. Time to document a few changes.

Comcast configured the old IP block and had to redo the configuration when I pointed out the error. I normally keep my notes online but I keep certain critical information in a bound notebook. Fortunately it was in my messenger bag.

Must have software for Windows Computers

I'm not a big fan of Microsoft Windows but my bank is. They make deposits easy and scanning checks on my old Canon LIDE60 is flawless. I recently re-provisioned a Dell Optiplex 780 (surplus ~$50) with Windows 7. No hurry for Windows 10. Microsoft provides OS updates and anti-virus and anti-malware software which is free and adequate for the task. I see no advantage in any of the paid anti-virus and anti-malware software. For non-Microsoft software I head to

New Router

We installed a new Mikrotik router this afternoon. Traffic appears to be flowing normally. Somewhat different hardware. Same software but Level 5 instead of L.evel 4 (for whatever that implies except a few hours of configuration). This completes this round of upgrades including border gateway router and UPS.

Computer arthritis

Approaching my 73rd birthday (tomorrow August 12), I am keenly aware of aching joints. I had two computer failures this weekend; one was a desktop that declared "No operating system" and a laptop that reported a memory error. I've been at this game for a long time and often I pop open the case, blow out the case with a can of "DustOff", and gently massage the connections.  No guarantees, but if it works, it is a cheap fix.
