Members’ Guide to Publishing on LSNet

  • Drupal

How do LSNet members publish all this cool stuff on the website?
Blogs, news, calendar events, with neat photos and graphics and everything--are you a member of LSNet who's itching to share something with the LSNet community?  It's easy!

  1. Decide what you want to submit to LSNet. Assemble your copy in a text file, using Notepad or another simple program that creates .txt files without adding formatting. Proofread your text file and save it in “My Documents” or somewhere else on your computer where you can find it easily.  Make sure the filename ends with ".txt."  This way, you will have a backup file.
  2. Log into LSNet using your username and password. When you are successfully logged in, you will see your member name beside a blue arrow right underneath the “Search” button.
  3. Click on “Create Content” in the list below your member name.  Now you are in Drupal, the LSNet Content Management System (CMS).
  4. Choose from the list of types of content to create. Your options are: Blog entry, Event, Forum Topic, Image, Page, Story, and Website Registration.
  5. When you click on a type of content, this will bring you to the "Submit" screen for that type of content. It will say "Submit Blog", for instance, if you choose to create a Blog entry.
  6. In the box labeled "Title," type a title or caption for your submission.
  7. Under Topics, choose your tags, which describe the kind of content you’re publishing to the site. Hold down the CTRL key to choose more than one.
  8. Pull up your saved .txt file with your copy and cut and paste your copy into the “Body” box.
  9. To activate the FCKeditor program, click on “Open rich editor.” This works like a word processor with a toolbar at the top and will add your HTML code automatically. Using this toolbar, arrange your text as you want it to appear. You can create links to other content on the internet with the "Insert/Edit Link" toolbar button.  For more on how to use FCKeditor, see the User's Guide at http://docs.fckeditor.net/FCKeditor_2.x/Users_Guide
  10. You can even upload images to our server straight from your own computer.  Use the "Insert Image" button on your FCKeditor toolbar and use the "browse" and "upload" commands to upload photos or other graphics to the LSNet server.  Once the image has been uploaded, you can click on "Insert Image" and then "Browse Server" to find it later.  After you successfully insert your image, you can move it around in your document, resize it, or wrap text around it by right-clicking on it and going to "Edit Image Properties."
  11. There are two buttons at the bottom of your FCKeditor page: "Ok" and "Cancel." When you are happy with your content as it appears on FCKeditor, hit "Ok." Now on your Submit screen in the "Body" box, you will see your text marked up in HTML code, all ready to be published.  If you know HTML, you can tinker with this; if you don't, leave it alone and go back into the FCKeditor to make any changes.
  12. VERY IMPORTANT: Preview before you publish!  At the very bottom of the Submit page, right above the advertisements, you will see two buttons:  Preview and Submit.  You definitely want to preview first.  The preview page shows you the trimmed version, which will be published to top of the LSNet home page.  The Full Version appears right underneath the trimmed version.  Your preview page also shows you how to put a delimiter into the HTML code in your "Body" text box, if you want the trimmed version to end somewhere besides at the end of the first paragraph.  The delimiter looks like this, but without the quotation marks: "<!--break-->"
  13. Click on "Submit" when the preview looks good to you.  Go to www.ls.net and admire your submission, right there on the top of the heap.  Isn't it wonderful?
  14. But what if, now that you've officially submitted your blog/announcement/memoirs/whatever, you see something you'd like to change?  No problem!  As the author, you can always edit or delete your published content any time you're logged in to LSNet.  Under your username (next to the blue arrow), select "Recent posts," then click the tab on the far right, "My Recent Posts."  Click on the title of the submission you want to edit, then click on the "Edit" tab, which takes you back to the "Submit" page.  (Your submission is only published to the top of the home page once, not every single time you edit, so no worries there.)

If you have any questions, please e-mail the LSNet staff and ask!  Don't be shy, don't be a stranger, and don't be a shy stranger.  What's going on in your neighborhood, in your family, in your church, in your business, in your brain?  What do you make of this world we live in?  How does your garden grow?

We know you have some great stuff to share with the LSNet community.  The only dumb question is the one you're keeping under your hat, so fire away.  We are right here and ready to help.
