Recent Windows 10 updates have enabled running bash on Ubuntu on Windows. There are several howtos, the one I happened to use is http://www.howtogeek.com/249966/how-to-install-and-use-the-linux-bash-shell-on-windows-10/. I got "root" as the default user; if you got something else,
lxrun /setdefaultuser should allow you to change to "root".

"damage at the plant" is pretty vague and includes vandalism, trenching, acts of nature, and a zombie apocalypse.
"animals" is pretty specific but includes rats, dogs, alligators etc.
The head end failure was hardware which they repaired pretty fast.
Not much consolation but these events were preceded by 6 months of relative calm. We could all use a break.
But stressful. Sometimes halts on the way down and then (naturally fails to come up).

It looks like the first outage ended with a temporary repair which was followed by perhaps a more durable fix. In between we had problems with the TWR edge router in Galax which made for a bruising week.
This time from 220.127.116.11 which is in a netblock 18.104.22.168/15. The server is in The Los Angeles area. The website is in Chinese. NOC abuse was notified and the following response was received.
