I keep getting notices of compromised accounts for myself and now I get a few about my clients. I am not sure this was a good idea but I signed up at https://haveibeenpwned.com/. I am now motivated to do something. I've stopped signing up at websites but I am sure the damage has been done.
The office in Independence is closed. All operations are now in Fairfax, VA. That means a lot of duplicate equipment. I plan on tailgating at Winterfest in Annandale on Sunday.
I recently upgraded my workstation monitor with a built-in camera and microphone. The entertainment machine has an external camera and microphone (Logitech, Inc. QuickCam IM/Connect). Both have Google Voice installed and "Hangouts" appears in my tools menu. I normally have Gmail open when I am around, so invitations to video chat should get my attention. Gmail is probably the primary means of contact but a video call may be more effective for complex issues especially when screen sharing will demonstrate a particular problem.
The ground rules:
Our history with Uninterruptible Power Supplies reveals there is no such thing.
Ran a bunch of updates and trashed LS.net. Also trashed my main workstation here in Fairfax. Chasing DDOS attacks on our wireless and fiber network. Needless to say, a bit much for this old sys admin.
Fortunately the fix for LS.Net was easy.
Fortunately I run a stock base so reinstalling the base seems to have fixed everything.
LSNet is now supporting Drupal 8. We have installed Release Candidate 1 at http://d8.ls.net and are exploring new features and use patterns. In a few days we will migrate LSNet so we get daily engagement and experience.
Comcast tech replaced the router with another Cisco 3939B. Woody checked out the connected devices. Everything looks good.
Helen, this server, went down again this morning. I bounced power to the server but that was not enough. Woody went to the POP and swapped ports with the Power Distribution Unit on the Cisco Gateway router and Helen came back. Bounced the Cisco router and after about 10 minutes everything came up. Waiting for a response from Comcast on the reliability issue.
I chanced across Mike's obit in the Roanoke Times. One is never quite sure how many one misses but finding out about such events without social media is random.
Dell said don't do it - "we are not providing drivers for Windows 10". My wife did it on her Dell Latitude 13. It works fine although the reboot was rough. Had to hold the power button for a long time to get it to shut down and reboot. Her Latitude 13 has an internal battery which is not easy to get to.
Third router in 35 days. Usual dance getting static IPs to work.Looks like Mish and Comcast techs have it going.
