Saturday CATS Sold Out

The dance musical CATS for tonight (Saturday May 10 at 6:00pm) is sold out. There are tickets still available for the Sunday May 11 performance at 3:00pm which will be sold at the door. $10 adult, $5 children 13 and under. The public is encouraged to bring pet food and supplies to any CATS performance with distribution going to local animal rescue groups.

A few tickets are still available for the dance musical CATS (amateur version)for Saturday, May 11 at 6:00pm and Sunday, May 11 at 3:00pm at the Rex Theater in downtown Galax. Court Street Coffee Company in Hillsville (276-730-9948)and Lemon's Jewelry in Independence (Sunday tickets only)(276-773-2680)have a few left. PLEASE CALL FIRST. Remaining tickets from these outlets will be picked up at 2:30pm Saturday May 10 and will be available at the door (if any are left!)

In celebration of their spring production of the dance musical CATS, the Conservatory of Dance & Theatre in Galax will accept donations of pet food and pet supplies at any performance with distribution going to local animal rescue groups. CATS will be performed by the Conservatory in partnership with the Galax Theatre Guild on Saturday, May 3 (2pm),and Sunday May 4 (3pm) and Saturday and Sunday, May 10 (6pm) and May 11 (3pm) at the Rex Theater at 113 West Grayson Street in downtown Galax. Admission is $10.00 adults, $5.00 children 13 and under. Advance tickets are on sale at the Conservatory, the Gardener’s Cottage, Chapters Bookshop and Purple Feet Wine, all in downtown Galax, also Lemon’s Jewelry in Independence and Court Street Coffee Company in Hillsville.

Cats Dance Musical at Rex Theater


     GALAX, Va. (April 2008)  The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre and the Galax Theatre Guild will perform an amateur version of the dance musical Cats Saturday, May 3 (2:00pm), Sunday, May 4 (3:00pm), Saturday, May 10 (6:00pm) and Sunday, May 11 (3:00pm) at the Rex Theater in downtown Galax. 

    The production will feature dancers from the Conservatory as well as vocalists from the area.

        Conservatory owner and artistic director Barbara Johnson is going outside the realm of classical ballet, which she is best known for.  “Our production of Cats will combine elements of jazz, modern dance, classical ballet and tap,” she said.  “Although the Conservatory’s forte is classical ballet, we also teach other dance genres.”

“One Night: Two Acts” February 28

Alleghany Community Theatre’s ACT Readers Theatre performance of “One Night: Two Acts” has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 28, in the Alleghany County Library, 122 North Main Street in Sparta. It had been cancelled because of the possibly of freezing rain last Thursday. The performance will be at 7:00 pm. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

      Directed by Jim Williams, this Readers Theatre production is actually two separate one-act plays, "All on Account of A Dog" written by Rebecca Saunders and "Not My Cup of Tea" written by A.F. Groff.

Twin County United Way - "Gone with the Wind"

Twin County United Way - "Gone with the Wind"The Historic Rex Theater Downtown Galax, The City of Galax in partnership with Blue Ridge Crest and the Twin County United Way will present this cinema masterpiece in all its large screen brilliance on February 16th at the Rex Theater. The show will begin at 7:00 pm and will feature newsreels, commercials and cartoons from the late 30's and early 40's to give patrons an experience of what it was to go to the movies back then. In addition, starting at 6:00, there will be classic swing and big-band pre-show music playing in the theater and moviegoers are welcome to show up early for this rare treat. Dancing is encouraged. The cost for admission is $2.50 and refreshments, including homemade baked goods, will be available.

Acting Classes Offered at Conservatory

The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre welcomes Linda Donnell as acting instructor.  Donnell will teach two classes: Acting for Children (7-9 year olds) and Acting for Middle School Students (10-13 year olds).  The classes will meet every Friday starting February 15 and will run for 6 weeks.  The Children's Class is from 4:30pm-5:30pm and Middle School students meet from 5:45pm-6:45pm.

In Acting for Children, students will be introduced to the actor's process by training their voice and body to respond in imaginary circumstances through varied warm-up exercises and theater games.

ACT Readers Theatre To Perform
“Anne of Green Gables” November 26 and 29

Alleghany Community Theatre’s next ACT Readers Theatre will be “Anne of Green Gables” scheduled for Monday, November 26 at the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence, VA, and Thursday, November 29 in the Alleghany County Library, 122 North Main Street in Sparta. Both performances will be at 7:00 pm.


Casting Call for The Nutcracker

Casting Call for The Nutcracker

The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre is looking for young boys, ages 8-13, to be soldiers in this year's production of The Nutcracker ballet. The boys do not have to dance, but will march, carry toy guns and defend Clara from the attacking mice. Soldier uniforms will be provided.

The Conservatory also has openings for adults who would like to be a parent in The Party Scene. Adults in the Party Scene mainly act with the children and will have an opportunity to learn ballroom dancing if they wish. Evening gowns and tuxedos will be provided.

The Nutcracker will be Saturday, December 8 at the Ashe Civic Center in West Jefferson, NC and Saturday and Sunday, December 15-16 in Galax and will require several rehearsals in Galax.
